For U.S. players, Grand Theft Auto VI already made headlines for one simple reason: the base game costs $79.99.
That price alone was enough to spark debate. For years, $70 has been treated as the new normal for major AAA releases. Now, with GTA 6, Rockstar is pushing one of gaming’s biggest franchises into what many fans are calling the $80 era.
But the situation gets even more frustrating when you look outside North America.
According to regional pricing data being shared across GTA communities, players in some countries are paying far less for the same game. In fact, in certain markets, the Ultimate Edition of GTA 6 appears to cost less than the Standard Edition does in the United States.
That is the part that has North American fans paying attention.
In the U.S., the listed price is $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. Meanwhile, South Korea’s Standard Edition is listed at ₩89,800, which converts to roughly $58, while its Ultimate Edition is around ₩112,800, or approximately $73.
In other words, a player in Korea can reportedly buy the Ultimate Edition for less than an American player pays for the base game.
Japan and India also appear to be priced lower than the U.S., with Standard Edition prices converting to around $61 and $63 respectively. On the higher end, some regions such as Israel, Switzerland, the UK, and parts of Europe are paying much more in USD-equivalent terms.
For American players, though, the comparison is hard to ignore.
The U.S. price is the one most people use as the global reference point. It is the number that gets discussed on Reddit, YouTube, X, TikTok, and gaming forums. It is also the price that helped turn GTA 6 into the symbol of a new, more expensive generation of blockbuster games.
So why are U.S. players paying $80 while other markets appear to be getting the game for much less?
The answer is regional pricing.
Major publishers do not always charge the exact same price in every country. Instead, they adjust prices based on factors like local purchasing power, taxes, exchange rates, platform conditions, and market demand.
That means a game can be priced at $79.99 in the United States, while the same title may be set lower in countries where publishers believe a direct U.S. price would hurt sales. In some markets, charging the full American price could make the game too expensive for a large portion of potential buyers.
There is also the tax issue.
In many countries, VAT or sales tax is already included in the displayed price. In the United States, sales tax is usually added at checkout and varies depending on the state. That makes direct price comparisons more complicated than they look at first glance.
Still, that explanation probably will not make U.S. players feel much better.
From the American buyer’s perspective, the headline is simple: you are paying $80 for the base game while some players overseas are paying less than that for the Ultimate Edition.
Canadian players may feel even worse. While U.S. players are reacting to the $80 base price, Canadian pricing can look even more painful after currency conversion and local pricing differences. For many North American fans, the global pricing chart makes the game feel expensive before it even launches.
To be clear, cheaper in U.S. dollars does not always mean cheap in real life. A $60 game in one country may represent a much larger share of the average player’s income than an $80 game does in the United States. Regional pricing exists because global purchasing power is not equal.
But online, players usually compare the final number — and that is where the frustration comes from.
There is also one thing fans should not do: try to exploit another region’s store.
Seeing lower prices in Korea, Japan, India, or other countries may tempt some players to use gift cards, VPNs, or foreign accounts to buy GTA 6 cheaper. But that can create serious problems. Cross-region purchases may violate platform terms, trigger account restrictions, cause payment issues, or create future headaches with DLC, bonuses, language settings, and account access.
Saving $20 or $30 is not worth risking an entire PlayStation or Xbox account.
The real story here is not simply that one country gets a better deal. The bigger story is that GTA 6 is exposing how uneven modern game pricing has become.
For Rockstar, regional pricing may be a smart business decision. It helps the company reach more players in more markets and adjust to local conditions.
For U.S. players, however, it is much harder to accept.
They are the ones staring at an $80 Standard Edition and a $100 Ultimate Edition. They are the ones being told this may be the future of AAA pricing. And now they are also seeing players in other countries pay significantly less for the same game.
That does not mean Rockstar is doing anything unusual. Regional pricing is common across the games industry.
But it does make the $80 price tag feel heavier.
GTA 6 may be the same game around the world, but for North American players, the price comparison is already becoming part of the launch conversation.
And whether fair or not, one thing is clear:
American GTA fans are paying premium prices — and the rest of the world just made that impossible to ignore.
